The project focuses on the aviation-safety twin, in line with the priorities identified by the European Parliament and by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which set the minimum safety standards. The main objective is to develop innovative technology solutions in the fields of environmental modeling applied to aviation, of materials and devices used in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), with specific reference to the airports of Catane, Comiso, Reggio Calabria and Naples.

In particular, among the issues affecting the aeronautics sector it should be mentioned the impact that phenomena such as clouds of volcanic ashes, desert sand suspensions and extreme weather events have on airport infrastructures; in addition it should be taken into account the impact on the materials used and, at the highest quotas, the criticalities arising from the exposure of electronic devices to ionizing radiation.

With the aim of improving the quality of forecasts for airspace and for volcanic ash deposition, it is planned to develop an integrated modeling system designed to provide data that will optimize airport operations when these phenomena occur. This system will include volcanological data with weather data extracted from high resolution models in order to obtain both prediction of dangerous atmospheric phenomena such as hail, turbulence and wind-shear, and quantitative estimates on the transport of fine dust, desert sands and volcanic ashes in the atmosphere and as deposit on the ground.

For measures in atmosphere, three doppler radars and two lidars will be used together with mobile stations and drones equipped with sensors. The final project product, constituted by a software, will be submitted to the National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) in order to obtain aeronautical certification. The model development meets the needs of the area and can be an important factor for its development by generating employment and by providing a basis for other initiatives to find fertile ground.

In fact, the information provided by the model will provide valuable support to both aerodrome management companies affected by these issues and to other stakeholders in the area, such as public administration entities (e.g. Civil Protection, Agro-information Services).
